If you answered yes to these questions, then join us for weekend of photographic fun and know-how. We have chosen Purakaunui as our location, because it offers a diverse range of landscapes and opportunities for photographs in a variety of weather conditions. Lowland Podocarp forests, rocky coastland with tidal pools and rivers running through Beech forests; these are some of the potential environments you can experience and photograph.
Topics potentially covered:
1. Light
Finding magic light, and the importance of it.
Matching the subject and style of photography to the light that you have in the moment.
Finding opportunities in any light.
2. Composition:
Some good compositional guidelines.
How to improve your photographic eye.
Ways to increase your creativity.
3. Equipment:
The opportunities that certain equipment offers us.
When you need to buy the best, when a cheaper option will do.
What’s really useful, what’s just gimmicky.
Using what you have well (often the worst equipment used well is still better that the best equipment used poorly)
When equipment is detrimental to the creative process.
4. Exposure:
Some simple tricks to nail exposure.
Low-light and long exposure photography.

Sunday 13, finishing at approximately 3pm
Where:
Purakaunui, Catlins.
Purakaunui Bay, Catlins.
Accommodation:
We’ll be staying in an old farmhouse that has been renovated and comfortably furnished. It has four bedrooms - two double and two twin - and two bathrooms/toilets.
Your choice of a double room at $70 per night (shared bathroom)
Or a twin share room at $30/person per night (shared bathroom)
Bedding and towels are supplied.
Meals:
Please bring food with you for a shared communal meal on the Saturday night. Lunches and breakfasts during the weekend will be your own responsibility.
Transport:
We ask that you provide your own transport to and from Purakaunui and that you are prepared to drive from the backpackers to each photography location. All the locations that we will use are within a 30km radius of Purakaunui.
Cost:
$300 per photographer plus accommodation.
The maximum number of photographers on the workshop will be restricted to 6, which means that you will receive lots of one-on-one tuition from Allan and plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
What to bring:
Raincoat
Large Umbrella
Footwear suitable for outdoor terrain e.g. native bush and coast
Warm clothing, including a hat and gloves
Camera and lens
Tripod
Camera batteries and charger
Spare memory.
5 Photographs stored on a memory stick that you are prepared to share with the group
A laptop with photoshop installed if you would like lessons in photoshop. (You can install a 30 day trial version for free.)
A sense of adventure and the willingness to give something new a go!
Equipment borrowing:
Some equipment can be borrowed and we’ll have some specialty equipment with us for you to try.

Structure of the days:
We’ll be up early and out late to capture the best light. Between these times there will be a mix of lessons and free time for doing your own thing. Whether that is photoshoping, critiquing photos you’ve taken, taking more photos or just chilling, the choice is yours.
